Winter-y Evening Drive Near John West Way, Construction Site & Year 2012 In Review

I enjoy photographing everything and to extract some of the things from everything are the night shots. However, it all depends what you take picture of. Note, I am still practicing. No tripod just using very high ISO.

The Ridgewood, John West Way, Town of Aurora

Few years ago I was following a fellow photographer from US and he took these amazing photos of the construction sites. I was hoping one day that I will have an opportunity to do so.

Well I have two here in the Town of Aurora and one of them is the condominium construction site (The Ridgewood) on the John West Way right across the Hollandview Trail Retirement Community.

I went for a drive today and my first stop was behind the movie theater Cineplex. At this moment it is probably the biggest construction site in the Town of Aurora. I have been following progress mostly during the summer, and now from this view point you can hardly see the Hollandview Trail place.

It felt like it was moving slow at first, but once they started to stack up the floors and walls I was able to see changes at the construction site at much faster rate.

This area on the John West Way, near the Aurora Town Hall, is definitely a high density area. I wonder how the traffic is going to be. It wasn’t so bad when I drove by around six o’clock. I actually was surprised to see two buses in the span of five minutes.

On the end of my journey tonight I dropped by the Town Hall and snap some pictures of the Christmas tree. I may be wrong but the tree seems much bigger this year, and it seems dressed more with lights. Well when I get some time I will check if I got some older photos to compare.

This brings interesting point, the landscapes don’t just change because buildings rise or fall, but in addition because trees grow and tress fall down and sometimes not by themselves.

Well this may be my last post for the year 2012, so let me summarize few things. I just checked statistics for this site and this site had about 17,300 visits and 35,800 page views in the year 2012. I think that this is not that bad for a local blog. About eighty percent of my visits are from Aurora and surroundings (York Region).

I published 110 posts, slightly less than last year, but this was because I launched community FOCUS (LivingInAurora.COM) site and spent some time writing some content there. I don’t know how many images were published on this blog in 2012 but all I can tell you that this blog has a library of over 1,400 images of the Town of Aurora or photos that were taken on the grounds of Aurora.

My list of subscribers is constantly growing and if they don’t subscribe to my mailing list I know I am being followed using RSS feeds. I do have a twitter account and interesting spread of followers. My site is mainly found via search engines because someone is looking for something specific. It is nice that some actually drop me emails and write me interesting things they know about Aurora.

This year I have engaged more in photographing changes happening in Aurora, and I will do that more in the following year. I have extensive library of photos of the former Wells Street Public School and there will be more as the main construction didn’t start yet. I also have extensive library of photos of the Petch Log House reconstruction which I have been photo shooting since October 2012.

To conclude this post, let me list few of many interesting keywords through which people found this photo journal blog: trees that cry, who lives on my road, aurora issues, environmental issues in aurora, is there water good for drinking in aurora ontario, aurora mystery solved, aurora ontario horror and brave naked. However, the most used keyword and variations were for wells street public school.

The Petch Log House, Built To Last, Part II

Going on the third month the Petch log house re-building continues. However, the major elements of the house are completed and of what I have seen so far, this house is going to be built to last for many generations to come.

I drove last weekend (December 16th, 2012) by the site and I noticed that they started to work on the siding, the face that is facing John West Way. I am sure by the time I get there tomorrow, all will be completed. If not me I hope someone else will take some pictures.

In reference to the picture above – originally there was a second floor in the Petch Log House accessible via stairs. As you can see on the picture above only half is covered.

It was suggested to leave this opening so visitors can see the second level or the attic. Since the second floor, or attic floor is not strong enough – visitors will not be allowed to see the attic if full floor is installed.

So far the opening is still there.

Well, this is a secondary roof – indestructible.

And here is something I did not see – how they built the overhang above the two windows, same on the other side.

On the 28th of November the roof was covered with ceder shingles. I arrived one day late to see it done. Well at least I got the footage of the big beam arrival and its installation which now hides under.

Not to worry about the windows. The boards are temporary. The windows and doors are custom made – just have to wait for those.

The above is one of my favorite photos. Note how the shadow from the overhang is almost aligned with the overhang, just slightly off because I was little late to shoot.

So what is so special about that photo? Well, the blue textured sky, the perfect light shining in the right direction, the symmetry and the ladder on the side. And the hint of the vapor barrier sheet that is going to cover the wood logs until uncovered again. Who knows when?

What else can I say? Ouch, that wall paper (vapor barrier) is not my favorite one, but I am sure the siding will, its made of wood. Confession to make, I thought it was going to be aluminum or some kind of engineered material. I am so glad to be wrong sometimes.

The new siding looks very new and plain. It will not be painted just let to age.

The Petch Log House, Built To Last, Part I

Last August 2011 Petch log house was taken apart – the restoration process began. In September 2012 preparation for re-building the Petch log house started on John West Way, near the Aurora Senior Centre and the entrance to the Community Arboretum.

First it was a pit filled with gravel, then foundation poured and then the assembly started. I have been following and photographing re-building of the Petch log house since October. My very first visit and real photo shoot took place on October 26th. When I was on the site the house was already three logs high in some places.

Since that day I was showing up every few days. Mainly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and some Fridays, when Matthew was in school. Watching it changing radically was interesting experience, photographing it was a rewarding experience.

I did upgrade my equipment since last year, new camera and new lenses, hopefully getting better too, and I can’t complain about the overcast skies I had through most of the initial re-construction of the house – all was just perfect, not to mention the hospitality of all those who worked on the site.

The house is now very close to the completion. If am not mistaken the wood siding installation started on Thursday or Friday of last week (December 13th, 14th).

The house is well reinforced with additional materials – two by fours wedged inside the window and door cutouts, solid wood wide window and door frames, square brackets on the corners where the logs are joined, and some new and modified logs that were heavily deteriorated.

The Petch log house is definitely built to last.

The roof rafters were built on the site. The roof was covered. So I thought they were done. Speaking of built to last, an engineered roof was added on top of the original roof to be shown in my next post. But it all started with the arrival of the big beam they put on top of the roof to start building secondary roof. I was told by Peter Van Nostrand that the big beam was coming at one o’clock, and right on the dot the beam came.

Remebering Petch House, When In Bad Condition

Looks like the Petch log house restoration will be soon done and the house will have a new look, different look, but then the Petch log house had few different looks over the years anyway.

Now build on the concrete foundation, new cedar roof, wood siding soon to be installed, new windows still in the making, electrical wiring just in time for Christmas – a complete makeover. After that some tedious work inside the log house is going to take place. On the inside the house, the logs surface will be exposed.

I got lots of pictures. Petch house is probably my first and biggest photo documenting portfolio. There are hundreds and hundreds of photos on my computer, and when I view them sometimes it still feels like I missed something. Well, I do have a missing link – what happened between last August, 2011, until October of this year, 2012.

So what happened? I really don’t know what happened. Probably mainly stuff like design work, engineering drawings were prepared, rework/treatment drawings, orders for new materials, planning – all the fun things you cannot photograph.

The logs on the other hand were given special trimming and a ‘steam spa’ treatment. Pictures don’t lie, there was a lot of deterioration on some of the logs, therefore, unfortunately not all the ends made to the new re-stored house.

So I thought that I had photos posted here from the last August (2011) when they took down the Petch log house for restoration, but I guess not. They were donated to Friends of the Petch House, and since the site does not exist anymore, there aren’t any photos online.

Therefore, before I publish photos of the house ‘from ground up’, I will share some photos ‘going down’.

It is interesting to see that lot of faces I photographed last year will appear on photos from 2012. Its been a long journey for the house and I am glad to see and hear that those who fought for this project for a long time were given this restoration assignment.

Not to mention it is so nice to hear how every person on the Petch log house restoration project is and continues to be proud of their work. I wish I could remember all I have been told, but then my camera did the ‘remembering job’ for me in pictures.

On the side note, today when I visited the site, I saw the last areas of the external wood surface covered with the vapor barrier. I guess it is going to be hidden for another 100 or 200 years, unless … needs to be uncovered.

Changing Aurora, New Grounds For Petch House, Near Aurora Senior Centre

Restored Petch log house will be placed near the Aurora Senior Centre – may be this fall or next spring. I doubt that anything will happen in the winter time.

To add to my changing Aurora series, it will be interesting area to visit having Petch House, Aurora Senior Centre and Town Hall – all seconds or minutes away from each other. Not to mention Skylight gallery at the Town Hall and entrance to the Community Arboretum.

The Petch log house definitely will stand out, especially being the only log house around all brick buildings. Looks like the area for the log house is now ready and fenced. All we need is the Petch log house. Let us then wait.

Outside Log Structure Of The Petch House

Couple of weeks ago when we were walking at the Community Arboretum we dropped by the future location of the Petch log house.

Well how much can you write about the fenced empty area, however, when I got home there was a comment written by Mike McCartney, and since the post he commented on Petch House, It Was A Lifetime Opportunity, was from last year, I thought it will be nice to re-quote his comment here in the post.

“Hi I have enjoyed reading your postings and pictures of the Petch House. I’ve tried searching the web for more history on this house but have had no luck.

A little bit of what I do know I learned from my family. The Mills family bought the property in the early 70′s, when it stood on Leslie Street, and started what turned out to be a very large Thouroubred horse breeding operation called Aurora Meadows. My uncle Alfred Mills who lived in it for many years told us that the original log cabin was apparently the scene of the last Indian/Settler skirmish in the area and was actually able to show us an arrowhead that was imbedded in one of the logs.

Not sure how historically accurate this is but thought you might find it interesting.“

A bit of interesting information – an arrowhead embedded in one of the logs? May be I should revisit my pictures and look for it.

Office/Retail Building, Nino D’aversa Bakery, Aurora

I often visit Town Hall to see the Skylight gallery, but I do also take photos from the windows on the third floor or from the parking lot. Looking North West there is a new building in town as well, office/retail space building – on the same plaza as Nino D’aversa Bakery.

Commemorative Trees in the Community Arboretum, Aurora

I hope that I am not the only one, but I really enjoy reading plaques, and when comes to the Community Arboretum if I had hours to spare I could spend those hours walking and looking at the plaques of the commemorative trees, and they don’t have to be just memorials to loved ones we have lost.

“They enable individuals, or groups, or organizations, to commemorate something that is important to them. The trees may be used as memorials to loved ones we have lost, or they may be gifts of love for husbands, wives, parents who are still living. They may commemorate special events in our lives, the birth of children, special birthdays, marriage. Aurora has been changing for almost 150 years, but definitely much faster in the recent years.

Aurora 1945-1965 An Ontario Town at a Time of Great Change, Milner

Aurora continues to change day by day. Continues to grow. We will never be a small town on the map and we will never be a population of four thousand of people.

Going about twelve months back, it all began with saving the Petch Log house. On my part that was great experience to explore the deteriorating log house before the restoration and to document my thoughts here.

Aurora 1945-1965 An Ontario Town at a Time of Great Change

Then search for more information about the town led me to Elizabeth Milner’s book, Aurora 1945-1965 An Ontario Town at a Time of Great Change. Being on the photo journey through the town in the past couple of years, the book is a jewel in my pocket.

So what that you were not born between those years. How can you relate? Of course you can relate. Milner’s detailed assembly of 20 years of town’s records will lead you to years before 1945 and beyond 1965. Her compelling book is actually very relative to the past and the future of the Aurora. On the end it is a book about the people of Aurora who made a difference.

Petch Log House

Last year about this time difference was made, Katherine Belrose came forward and Petch log house was saved, probably restored by now, yet future location unknown.

Nokiidaa Trail Link, St. John's sideroad, Aurora

‘The Anglican Sisters of St. John gave St. John’s Sideroad its name when their convent was built in 1931. In 1940s and early 1950s, the Convent was a busy place. The Sisters cared for girls with special needs such as: Downs Syndrome, autism and other problems. …

They came each Sunday to morning service at Trinity Anglican Church, bringing the young girls for whom they cared. They sat at the front, on the north side of the church, under the pulpit. The sisters sat erect, silent and still in their penguin outfits. Usually their wards were silent and still too, but occasionally there was a strange noise wiggle, or turning head that was quickly corrected.‘, 1958, Milner, page 94.

Wells Street Public School Sold

Wells Street Public School got sold last year. Must mention that Elizabeth Milner was a grade nine student at this school for one year from September 1951 to April 1952.

Yonge Street, What Changed Here?

Next time you pass by Yonge Street and Tyler Street intersection you will notice change, the new commercial and residential complex. On the other hand one might say – the downtown traffic increased.

The Auroran, Sold

‘James Murray cut a ribbon at the old Post Office on Yonge Street in September of 1960 to mark the beginning of door-to-door mail delivery in Aurora.‘, 1960, Milner, page 167.

The old Post Office on Yonge Street is also home of our local newspaper The Auroran that was started by Ron Wallace and recently sold.

Once IGA Store, Now Nothing Yet

‘In 1961, the town’s IGA offered steak at seventy-nine cents a pound and prime rib roasts at sixty-five cents a pound. Oranges were fifty-nine cents a dozen and a cauliflower sold for twenty-nine cents.

Usually cakes were made from scratch, but if the housewife wanted to cheat with a newfangled cake mix, they were selling at two for thirty-three cents. That’s how it was in 1961 at the IGA Foodliner.‘, 1961, Milner, page 175.

Recent closing of the Foodland grocery store was total surprise and shock to the seniors living close by. It is very much unknown who will move in, but last week I read Banner and it was noted that the building was on the list for Youth centre. It may not happen, there were other competing locations.

George T. Browning House, Demolished

The proposed conversion of the Browning house to Montessori school didn’t go to well and it was decided to demolish the house. The Browning house was demolished couple of days before Easter.

Tree Trimming, Yonge Street from the Aurora Public Library

‘In the December third Banner, letters to the editor showed that Aurora people were upset about changes in Aurora. One citizen complained about the trees coming down and the land being stripped down to bare clay near one of the best streams in town.‘, 1959, Milner, page 152.

We continue to cut the trees. Some needs to be cut or trimmed, but some were not given any mercy.

Isaac Petch Farm House, Wellington Street, To Be Demolished

‘Highway 404, the Don Mills Parkway extension, was proceeding north and would pass three miles east of Aurora. John B. Wilkes, an engineer from the Department of Highways, spoke to the Board of Trade and assured them that Highway 404 would reduce traffic through the town by one third to one half. The first section of Highway 404 opened early in July.‘, 1961, Milner, page 170.

Highway 404 most likely will not change, but there is no future for the old and lonely Isaac Petch Farm house on Wellington Street – it will be demolished.

Elizabeth Milner in the book’s Afterward wrote: ‘I did not want to write a book about a “wonderful Aurora” of the past. This is often the kind of local history that results from reminiscences. The town was a good place to grow up. The people were good people. They helped one another, supported churches and social institutions as well as the needy in other provinces and countries; but everything was not perfect.

Disputes about having a liquor store in town, the use of open land, the building of a shopping centre, Town Council decisions and other incidences might seem trivial to the reader, but they were heated issues at the time.‘

Perhaps somethings just don’t change in our town – we continue with heated issues to make the difference.

Wildlife Park In Aurora, Yes, Yes, We Must Have One

I was behind with my newspaper reading this week. It was last night that I finally took the Thursday The Banner/The Era roll of papers from February 2nd and started to look through.

After scanning and finally reading something interesting ‘Town seeks plan for wildlife park‘ by Jeremy Grimaldi, I thought what a wonderful great amazing thoughtful idea and we are one step closer after council approved spending over $200,000 to create the master plan for the wildlife site.

A wildlife park site in Aurora. Just another reason for me not to move, however, I never had any intentions to move in the first place and what would just happened to my blog – so no.

Provided the location of the proposed wildlife site, north of Wellington Street, between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street, I looked up the Google map to see where would the block of 100 acres be. It is a stretch of land that looking from the top view it has a nice mix of wetlands, woodlands and grasslands. According to David Tomlinson this combination is a great mix to create an urban nature reserve.

The Google map is probably outdated by now (it was at the time Longo’s plaza was constructed) so I must one day see the site for myself. The trees are probably much bigger and probably more overgrown.

While reading, I am also impressed with Mr. Tomlinson’s work in that area – logging the species. Witnessing 150 bird species at the site, and 75 nesting. However, I recall him writing before in the Auroran that we have 100 bird species in Aurora. Well they come and go, like that Pelican that flew over Aurora many moons ago.

My birding list would really improve if I was able to witness this number too. My list is over 110 bird species, but I cheated a bid because I added many birds in captivity I saw at the Jurong Bird Park in Singapore. Someone told me that it doesn’t count and this someone is probably right.

So what is in the master plan that excite me? ‘The master plan will include a proposal for bird watching towers, an educational centre (aha may be Petch house?) and trails through parts of the site.’ – The Banner reported.

Can we ask for more here in Aurora? I don’t think so, but may be few more wildlife parks after that. We just have to get one going.

Scary Scary Night, A Bit Of Ghost Today

Halloween, and why not a bit of ghost story for you today. Trick or treat, scary houses, hunted forest and spirit walks – all here in our Aurora. So I thought I will join the wagon and tell my scary story.

I am sure everyone has a story to tell about, I call, the unknown. It is unknown to me and I don’t want to know what it is. Feelings are strange, and it scares me. I don’t like it. For now I prefer the real people, yet the unknown sometimes likes to hang around me.

I am not sure if this is best story to tell, but this is the only one I have that pertains to Aurora and good for Halloween.

July 29, 2011 few days before the Petch House was going to taken apart I dropped by the place to see the progress. I made many visits to the site, especially before its final moments before restoration. That day was interesting one. It was a nice and comfortable day. I didn’t take many pictures as during my previous visits. For some reason I just wanted to be there. I think I developed personal attachment to this house. I felt it.

Around 11:25 am I started to head for home. I was about 0.5 km away from the Petch house and pulled over. I have decided to take just a few more pictures of the house before its new journey that was sitting alone in the field, and I did.

Later that afternoon I downloaded and reviewed all the pictures. A mysterious streak of gray on the left top corner of the photo appeared on one of the images when I was quickly viewing them. I went back and examined, but I couldn’t tell what it was. It got me thinking how it got there.

I took four photos in 2 seconds with my Canon 7D, and the second photo showed the streak. I tried to reason. May be some kind of light distortion. May be bug flew by. May be airplane left smoke behind (flying club near by). May be dirt on my lens. May be wind blew something. May be it was my hair. No I had it secured in the pony tail.

None of the above made sense. Oh well I will never know I thought. That afternoon I left it to be as an unsolved mystery.

Petch House

Something There, Petch House

I would never thought of this being a some kind of ghost photographed but when things were kind of strange later … it left me with some scary conclusions.

Hours later, the same night about 2 am in the morning Matthew woke up scared. He started to move strangely, pushing something away from his body. Screamed for light to be put on. Kept crying and when stopped to cry he was pushing something away from his body again. He was stiff, spooked and not himself.

He definitely wanted it to go away. I was getting getting spooked myself, and my husband was in ‘just let me sleep please‘.

Last time I saw him like that was when his grandfather passed away when he was only three months old. That day for about 10 minutes he was crying on and off, stiff, spooked and not himself too. I could not snuggle him at all.

It happened again. This time he was older and was feeling or seeing something. Looking beyond us. We all moved to another room. He kept pushing away something again. We tried to go under covers as it was kind of cold but he was moving so much that we just decided to wait it out. We left the lights on and were like that for good 45 minutes until he finally relaxed, snuggled and in a nick of time he went to sleep.

It never happened again since then. Just that one night. Coincidentally it was hours apart between ‘something on the photo‘ and when Matthew got the nightmare. Children sometimes sens more than us adults, and may be he did.

But what? I don’t know. May be it was nothing and may be it was something. I will leaver readers to decided.

Aurora Farmers Market, In The Past It Was Old Post Office & General Store

The Aurora Farmers Market is definitely not just a place to buy local but also it is a gathering place ‘Your Meeting Place In Aurora‘. Another place to buy, but there is more. A place where we meet others. A place where children have fun. A place where we escape.

It is so typical these days in Aurora to say I will be at the Farmers Market or I meet you at the market. ‘I hope we get a chance to meet up one day, maybe over a coffee at the market‘, once Matt Maddocks wrote me, and I hope so too.

I don’t know many people, but I know Katherine Belrose (Friends of Petch House) very well and we always got to chat on the market. Her Pioneer booth was exciting one last Saturday, and was well aligned with the Senior’s Day.

Now, where else would you meet, it is so simple, and most of us know the way to the market on Saturday morning. And if you don’t know where it is, on Saturday all signs lead to the Aurora Farmers Market.

Our Farmers Market definitely has a social component built in. It is really nice to see people chatting with each other. Vendors shop among themselves. People buy with enthusiasm. Re-usable bags are being filled to the top.

I great place for children to get out, visit the playground, cool off at the splash pad and then head out for a nice cookie or pop-corn treats, or even have full lunch.

On August 13th the market had a very busy day. It was Senior’s Day, a very eventful as you will see in my later post. Busy shoppers buying a lot of good healthy food, fruits and vegetables especially this time of the year at the peak of the farmer’s harvest. It is easy to capture the essence of the market with my camera, but this time it was in the air. A strong aroma of fresh veggies and herbs traveled throughout.

‘From its opening on November 24, 1915 until its closure in 1967, the old Post Office played an important role as a focal point of activity in the life of Aurora. The central platform for mail deposit was a convenient stage for citizens to express their opinions on matters of local concern. Before the advent of home delivery, collecting the mail was an opportunity for neighbours to socialize. Its clock has chimed the hours for generations of Aurora citizens.‘ Source: Town of Aurora Website.

‘The Post Office officially opened on November 24, 1915. The building soon became an important place for people to gather and spend time with their neighbours and colleagues. The letter drop, located in the middle of the building, was often used as a platform for speakers. The welcoming addresses for soldiers returning from the First and Second World Wars were made from this platform. The chimes of the tower clock announced the time for the community then as it does today.‘ Source: Town of Aurora Website.

Nothing lasts forever. Times change. The General Store was once a gathering place too:

‘In 1951, the general store operated by Mr. Larry Rubin and his brother Lou became the Aurora I.G.A. Foodliner, a supermarket. There were incentives to visit the store: special prices, door prices and a draw for twenty-five dollars. The store had everything except a meat department, but that was soon added. Aurora then had one stop food shopping on Wellington Street East. To conclude my photo journey of the Aurora Farmers Market on August 13th, let me say that – there is always room for a garden.

Petch House, It Was A Lifetime Opportunity

Theoretically Petch House will never be the same. As of a last week August 4th, 2011 in the late afternoon, the house was totally taken apart and all logs and other parts of the house were moved to the storage on the local farm where it will be restored. In the future, it will have a new and restored look.

However, it will take a great skill to restore the house, as it took a great skill to built this house in 1840s, and in the future this will be definitely a historical event.

I must say it was a lifetime opportunity to photograph the Petch house before it was labelled and dismantled. I was inside in the early spring. I many times visited from outside. I saw and photographed the gradual deterioration, especially of the logs on the corners. I saw embraced by nature and guarded by wildlife.

Lastly I was able to photograph inside again when town went go ahead with the dis-assembly. I was inside once again by permission equipped with my camera, safety boots and hard-hat. Once the roof was removed, the logs inside got to see the natural light and beautiful wood log textures were revealed.

Then on August 3rd, 2011 I found a spot across the Leslie Street to witness and photograph the dismantling process of the walls, down to the floor. I had my little Matthew with me that day, so going closer to the site with a heavy equipment was a big no for us.

Hope everyone enjoyed my little photographic journey of the Petch house last few months, but before you move on note something I just realized – the background. There was nothing else, but trees, lots of green trees.
