Playground at the Copland Park probably has the highest slide, double turn, in the whole Aurora; unless someone will tell me there are others. Today we arrived just before noon. As we were coming down the hill towards the playground I noticed an older man sitting on the end of the slide. He just appeared.

Playground at the Copland Park

I turned to my husband and said, “I think this guy just went down the slide“. Before he could answer me one of his granddaughters asked the man probably in his late sixties the same thing “did you just went down the slide?“. We didn’t hear the answer but his second granddaughter asked “did you hurt your bum?“. Looks like he did go down the slide then.

Perhaps he was tempted to try this dare-devil slide and he didn’t hold back. When I was growing up these slides didn’t exist, just the straight down metal ones. May be when this man was growing up there were none.

Playground at the Copland Park

Most of our visits to the Copland Park are interesting one and this one was too. Matthew made friends with a little boy. They played very well together and when we asked Matthew that it was time to go home, the tree year old Mason said “you mom and you dad go home, Matthew will be playing with me“. But that didn’t sit well with Matthew. We allowed them to play for another 10 minutes. The two boys had a blast.

This is another super hero story. It is amazing how children engage to play so fast when they have somethings in common. Matthew brought his Man of Steel figurine and little Mason had Superman shirt on. Both of them played so well from the moment Matthew said to him “I love your Superman shirt“. They may not see each other again but they hugged like best friends.

We got lot of snow in the past 24 hours in Aurora. I have not left anywhere else so I cannot comment on other places. I checked weather forecast too and for the next week – looks like it is warming up. But today it was a beautiful sunny day to enjoy outside.

Going Down Hill, Hamilton Park, Town of Aurora

When we were outside I noticed that the snow exposed to the sun started to melt, but that was not enough sun to melt the almost one meter piles of snow in front of houses on our street. Lots of snow and lots of sun – two things good to have to play in the snow.

Matthew Making Snow Angels, Hamilton Park, Town of Aurora

We went tobogganing there was a lot of snow on the soccer field at the Hamilton Park, but it was manageable to walk across. Kids already were playing there, and probably there were more earlier as there were tracks left behind.

Going Down Hill, Hamilton Park, Town of Aurora

Something about the children and the snow. When Matthew came out the house, first thing he did was dived (real dive too) for the pile of snow, not even thinking of consequences. He got white snow all over his face, cleaned up and dived for another pile. Then he started to inspect bottom of the cars for icicles.

Hamilton Park, Children Playing in the Snow, Town of Aurora

On the field we had hard time to get him on the toboggan, every second we turned away from him – he was already rolling in the snow. We helped him to make a snow angel, and by looking at the print afterward, not sure what it was.

He saw four girls playing in the snow nearby and started to do the same – rolling more in the snow. Well, we did the same when we were growing up too. The beauty about the snow is that it does not get you dirty, just wet.

Children Playing in the Snow, Hamilton Park, Town of Aurora

Well not sure about other children, but when I picked up Matthew from school last Thursday, who knows what he was rolling in. There was mud on him everywhere, the hat, the jacket, the snow pants and the face.

You just got to love them for their free spirit, but I hope there will be little less of that free spirit next week when it will be ‘splashy’ and wet.

I blew my cover at the Aurora Farmers Market. Then really what cover? I never had one I just never told anyone what I do and who I am – I just take candid photos and then I write footage on my blog.

Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

We missed the 2012 grand opening of the Aurora Farmers Market last week but not yesterday. There is always something for everyone to buy to bring home, eat at the site, gather to chat and enjoy time with children at the market.

We usually have our own routine. Our routine is to walk around, look around, have some hot popping popcorn and then playtime with Matthew at the playground. Yes, and take photos as well.

Cracklin' Kettle Corn, Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

We finally arrived at the scene just before lunch. Its like having deja vu. Nothing changed since last year, same guys, same yellow red colors and same great and delicious kettle popcorn at the same Cracklin’ Kettle Corn stand. And they never fail to offer you a free sample even if you are returning customer and know how good it is.

This year it will be different because we got to know who’s behind the popping popcorn, Johnmark Cooper and Steven Ratnik.

Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

Well before we got our popcorn few questions, few answers, one conclusion – ‘We know who you are?‘ Then there were few more questions, few more answers, photo shoot and then we finally got our popcorn.

Well I have my own conclusion. Something tells me that these guys know more than just the popcorn business. Too many technical questions.

Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

Why not share some answers in here.

The Living in Aurora blog was first created in Blogger in August 2009. March 2011 I migrated to the WordPress platform and everything else flourished since then. I have about 1400 visits and over 3000 page views per month.

Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

Visitors are mostly from Aurora and surroundings but I do get visitors beyond Ontario or even Canada. Once in the blue moon someone from Asia pays me a visit searching for Aurora Ontario – strange but true. I have about 50 subscribers via email and feeds. Site is bullet proof and my spam box rarely fills. The rule for this blog is ‘Aurora only‘.

Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

Overall I must say that it was a very good year and I am happy with my results just like farmer’s market is probably satisfied with theirs. People were coming and coming and going.

Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

Now back to some of my photo observations. It was so refreshing to see a child eating cucumber, something you rarely see. It was so refreshing to see someone biking to the market – or may be he was just cutting through?

Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

And the aroma, which was hard to photograph, flowing in the air from the Big Grill made us eat bag of popcorn just behind their booth.

Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

One of these days we will have breakfast, snack, exercise at the playground and lunch at the market. Its going on the second year and our trips to the market are getting better and better.

Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

It is also place for children. May be one day Matthew will talk about how we took him to the market as I sometimes talk about my parents taking us to the local fairs – my favorite buy were lolly pops and cotton candy.

'I am going back', Aurora Farmers Market 2012, Town Park

All this writing and I just noticed that there is a slight change in the name for the Aurora Farmers Market. Town of Aurora calls it now the Aurora Farmers’ Market & Artisan Fair.

That is fair fair fair.

Remembering Christmas … I always wanted to be St. Nick. When I was 12 years old I said what the heck, no body will know that I am a girl under the red suit. So I did. In 1983 St. Nick arrived for the first time at our home for my sister (7 years old) and my brother (2 years old).

Many years passed by and in 2006 I was back again knocking at the doors. I spent two weeks before Christmas hand sawing my Santa suit and I putted into a good use that year and the following year. In 2008 and 2009 I took maternity leave; however, I was back on the job Christmas 2010 and 2011.

Santa I, 2006

In 2010 Matthew was about 2.5 years old. He understood the concept of Christmas and knew that Santa will bring presents to him. He was ready for Santa to show up at our door.

Santa ‘I’ arrived on the Christmas Eve. I knocked at the door. I came in and delivered his presents. He stood there and studied me, and of course was holding on to Daddy. I said something to him and instead answering to me Matthew started to look around, Mommy? – he asked. He was looking for me. Oops he recognized my voice. I guess next year I will have to be a silent Santa.

Christmas 2011. This year we were celebrating Christmas Eve at my parents in Mississauga. Since Matthew wrote letter to Santa for the black Nintendo DS I thought it would be fun to bring this letter with me and show him that I got it. At 3, Matthew somehow thought himself to draw faces and been drawing them everywhere. Sometimes he adds extra hair and if you lucky you will get a brain.

Letter To Santa From Matthew, 2011

So I arrived once again at the door. Matthew was happy to see Santa, surprised to see the letter and would not take eyes of me. He studied me once again from head to toe. I only released few ho-ho-hoes, but remained silent for the rest of the time.

Another mission accomplished, so I thought.

I left the room and as quickly as possible I changed back to Mommy. I came back and looks like everyone was busy laughing at me not even knowing I arrived.

I stood at the entrance. My eyes met Matthew’s eyes from across the room, and to my surprise I heard him say ‘Oh, it was Mommy‘. Oops he noticed the Santa eye-glasses I forgot to swap. When I came back up again he was busy opening his present and forgot all about.

I guess next year I will have to make Santa suit for Daddy.

The ‘Playground equipment sparks debate‘ an article published in The Banner on July 14, 2011 definitely sparked debate everywhere. ‘A piece of playground equipment in Confederation Park is under the microscope as residents are divided on weather to have it removed or leave it in place.‘, page 1.

Ada Johnson Playground

I thought I join this debate also, since I am very frequent visitor to the playgrounds in Aurora. Of course not by myself, with my 3 year old son.

My thoughts …

Playground equipment is not designed for one age. It is designed for range of ages. It is my responsibility as a parent to recognize my child’s climbing and maneuverability skills and let them play with the monkey bars, double hump camel climber or other equipment. Would I let my three year old now, or four year old next year climb such? No, he is a talker, but definitely not a climber at this stage of his life.

Ada Johnson Playground

Monkey bars, double hump camel climber and some other equipment I have seen are definitely for 10 year old children or older. Children at this age are more skilled but also bigger in size so falling through would be little difficult, never mind less distance to fall.

I am very protective parent. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Anything that my child wants to climb and I determined that it is not for him, he either is assisted or not allowed to use that piece of equipment.

Playgrounds are not just for fun, they are also learning experience for our children. Children fall, then they learn about pain and danger. We tell our children they cannot climb this or that, they learn about discipline. Children climb slides, we teach them about playground rules.

Children don’t know much about danger and are spontaneous. That goes with some of us too. Children are fearless. Again, as I responsible parent I must see danger ahead of my child, and warn them. If I cannot climb monkey bars, double hump camel climber or other equipment and probably cannot, then it is not for my child. If I know that my child likes to try new things, I watch him like a hawk. They learn, sometimes a spontaneous move can hurt.

My child fell backwards from top of the slide onto the stairs. My mistake, I should have examined the slide. There was a very little land for him to sit, he lost balance and fell backwards. Should I ask for the redesign. No, I assisted him until he became older and more skilled in maneuvering around. I learn too.

My child almost burned himself on the metal slide. Yes, we still have those in Aurora. My mistake, I took my child to the playground around lunch time, at the peak temperature. I did not examined the slide again. It was metal, and not plastic and you could almost cook an egg on its surface. No more visiting this playground. On the second thought, this is the playground I would suggest to replace.

Ada Johnson Playground

My conclusion …

Be responsible for your child they are fearless little creatures.

On the second hand I don’t understand what the subtitle on the page one of The Banner under ‘Playground equipment sparks debate‘ reading ‘Initiative promotes carpooling, public transit use‘, has to do with the whole article. A typo?

It is nice that we don’t have to travel long distances to have fun, and now especially with the high gas prices walking and visiting locals in Aurora is even more encouraging. I think it is a good thing.

Well, lot of things to do here in our town and so little time for a one day. I had three things on my list to visit today in Aurora: the Great Canadian Cat Show at the Aurora Community Centre, the Sheppard’s Bush and the Farmer’s Market.

Why cat show? I don’t know, but I thought I practice some indoor photography. However, will my little boy enjoy it? Probably not this time. Sheppard’s Bush – who does not like to walk the trails in the shade, but there are always mosquitoes. The Farmer’s Market never fails – and guess what, the splash pad at the Town Park playground is OPEN for the summer.

Town Park Splash Pad (Wells and Mosley streets)

We didn’t bring any change clothes for Matthew since we thought may be it will be too cold. Cold in the summer? Oh boy, I was wrong. He played at the playground and occasionally he watched children play in the water. I gave in. I just could see in his eyes he wanted to be there and play. We all love water in the hot summer day, how can we let him miss that opportunity.

My Bundle of Joy Testing Water First

Children are amazing. I really enjoy watching them when they have so much freedom playing. Combined with right weather conditions, water is number one fun resource – so simple, yet encourages creativity and fun when playing.

Whoops, looks like someone just got splashed in the face.

Little Too Much Water In His Face

Speaking of creativity. On the picture below, a little girl is trying hard to capture the water in the pink bucket. At first she waited for it to stop shooting, and then she covered it up and waited for the water to come back in order to capture it in the bucket and not let it go out. I watched her couple of times, and she was quite successful yet brought others to observe too. Sometimes I wonder, how much toys children need. Little less brings up creativity and innovation.

Creative Playing

Oh this one in the pink dress was so adorable.

Little Ballerina

There will be lot of ohs in this post today. Oh for this little girl playing in the water (photo below). She is such a doll and a trooper. Walking off the splash pad she slipped and scrapped her knee. I didn’t hear a cry.

Enjoying Cool Water

Oh, oh and here comes my Super Man, Iron Man, Spider Man, Super Hero, my bundle of joy – Matthew. We took off his shoes and let him play. I just said, ‘let him go, the clothes will dry out‘. No matter where we are, Matthew always enjoys himself to the fullest, and I am glad that I am able to capture those moments because we just have too many of them everyday to remember.

Matthew

When I don’t take pictures, I record moments like that in my notebook. Last night we were at the Hamilton Park. There was no body there when we arrived. Soon three boys arrived, and here comes my boy yelling: ‘Hi boys! How are you doing?‘. At some point he came up to them and sang A B C song, and then asked ‘Do you know your A B Cs boys?’. They just looked at him and smiled. Well they were at least 10 years old or older so they better know their A B Cs. For the record, Matthew is three years old.

Sometimes it is hard for me to fit my one day of good experiences in one post. Stayed tuned for more of my eventful day today, this time at the Farmer’s Market.

The inspiration to write this post today came from reading Christopher Watt’s latest post, Weekly Inspiration : the little engine that could. My post has nothing to do with little engines, but is relates to how wonderful the little minds are. Sitting side by side, we finished our breakfast – eggs, toast and cucumber. Then I moved on with reading The Auroran and Matthew moved on to play with his iron man figurines. Still side by side.

At some point I reminded him that today is his birthday, ‘you are 2 years old and 11 months‘. He smiled, and asked if we can have some cup cakes. I smiled back, and we both moved on with our things. I continued to read and he continued to play. At some point I whispered, ‘we can have some pretend happy birthday cake and sing happy birthday song‘.

McKenzie Marsh Boardwalk

Few minutes passed …

– ‘Mommy look look what’s say here‘ – Matthew asked suddenly.
– ‘Mommy look PLAY‘ – Matthew confirmed again while looking at The Auroran newspaper.

I realized that Matthew was reading over my shoulder.
– ‘Show me where is the PLAY‘ – I asked.
– ‘Here‘ – and he pointed at the PAY word.
– ‘Oh yes, but Matthew, it reads PAY, there is no L in here‘ – he listened as I explained.
– ‘See, it says Town will pay all legal bills to late Dec.‘ – I read for him as he continued to listen.
– ‘You know what Pay means, you pay with Master Card for things you buy.‘ – I said and he nodded.

We moved again. Matthew continued to play with his toys, and I continued to read The Auroran, and when I got to the page nine and was reading an article by Scott Johnston, I realized again that Matthew was reading over my shoulder.

– ‘Mommy look PLAY says over there‘ – he stated.
– ‘Matthew you are so right, yes it says Play here‘ – he smiled and nodded his head as I confirmed.
– ‘Here Matthew, it reads as follows Theatre’s latest is a play within a play‘ – he smiled, and moved on with his playing.

Not even three years old and he is motivated to learn how to read. I guess there will be no pretend happy birthday cake today. We are going to celebrate and indulge on the healthy oatmeal apple chocolate muffins, and we did. Matthew is also a great helper.

It is a real fun to be a parent.
